Supporting Older People with Sight & Hearing Loss
Many people – especially older people lose their sight and hearing.
This can make visiting going into a residential or nursing home a terrifying and isolating experience as they find themselves unable to join in conversation with other residents or take part in activities. It can make people nervous about using home-care services.
Some very simple steps taken by management and staff can transform those experiences and enable clients to get the most out of the service.
Supporting Older People with Sight and Hearing Loss is a one day course designed to give front line staff insight into the difficulties faced by people with sight and hearing loss together with guidance on improving the environment and offering support.
The course will give:
- knowledge of the emotional and practical difficulties faced by older people as they lose their sight and hearing
- ideas for making the environment safe and accessible
- guidance on how to provide accessible information
- practical methods of communication with hard of hearing people
- practice in safe guiding techniques

Supporting Patients with Sight Loss
Many people who make use of health services have sight loss. This can create problems with missed. It is known that people with sight loss are more likely to miss appointments than their hearing and sighted counterparts. This may be as a result of an appointment card or letter that cannot be seen by the patient.
Patients with sight loss can also experience difficulties accessing health centres or hospitals and many report difficulty reading labels on medicines. This can result in medication being missed or taken at wrong times.
Some very simple steps taken by management and staff can transform systems and enable clients to get to appointments on time and to gain more benefit from the patient care pathway.

Understanding Vision Care Pathways
Most people who are blind or partially sighted will need support from health and social care professionals either at the time of diagnosis or at a time of change. Understanding Vision Care Pathways is a one day course designed to give staff in the health and social care professions insight into the difficulties faced by people with sensory impairment and information about specialist support services, strategies and resources.
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the social implications of visual impairment, its relationship to medical conditions and its effect on individuals and their families
- Identify the key transitions in services for visually impaired people and be able to recognise key professionals along the eye-care pathway.
- Recognise the impact of sight loss on older people and those with additional disabilities
- Demonstrate a good basic knowledge of common eye conditions and their medical and practical implications, and the ability to communicate this to patients in lay language
- Show an understanding of low vision and how it can be maximised

Meeting the needs of customers with sight loss
Blind and partially sighted people need to make use of banks, shops, hotels and leisure centres as anyone else. But for them the customer experience can be filled with frustration because of difficulty with accessing information and finding their way around. Some simple measures could make a huge difference to the experience of customers with sight loss and the half day course Meeting the needs of customers with sight loss is designed to equip staff with the knowledge they need to make these adjustments.
The course will give:
- knowledge of the emotional and practical difficulties faced by blind or partially sighted people
- knowledge of some common eye conditions and their impact
- ideas for making the environment safe and accessible
- guidance on how to provide accessible information
The adjustments needed will differ between hotels and leisure centres, banks and between different types of shop. Each course is tailored to the needs of the particular group of delegates.
