National Eye Health Week 2010 – Vision Matters

For the first time ever the UK eyecare sector is joining forces with charities and healthcare professionals to launch National Eye Health Week 2010 (14- 20 June).

Every day one hundred people in this country start to lose their eyesight. But we know that 50% of sight loss is avoidable. This means that over 18,000 people a year lose their eyesight unnecessarily. Hearing and Sight Solutions supports the aims of National Eye Health Week in raising awareness of this and help to prevent avoidable blindness.

Go to www.visionmatters.org.uk to find out more about National Eye Health Week events in your area.

A new course from Hearing and Sight Solutions

Hearing and Sight Solutions now offers training to professionals working with congenitally deafblind people. Insights into Communication with Congenitally Deafblind People is a five day course which provides learners with knowledge and understanding of communication with congenitally people born with dual sensory impairments who do not use either English or BSL as a formal language. It is designed to prepare candidates for the Signature Level 3 Certificate of the same title.

For full details of the learning outcomes and topics covered please contact Hearing and Sight Solutions. For further information about assessment visit the Signature website at www.signature.org.uk and follow the link to qualifications.

March 2010

Every day one hundred people in this country start to lose their eyesight. The UK Vision Strategy makes us aware that 50% of sight loss is avoidable. Over 18,000 people a year lose their eyesight unnecessarily. Hearing and Sight Solutions wants to raise awareness of this and help to prevent avoidable blindness.

We are, therefore, offering to arrange events in local communities which will raise awareness of the importance of nutrition to eye-care, to inform people that smoking increases their chances of going blind and to advise people to have regular eye tests. Local authorities and NHS Trusts that wish to take advantage of this programme of local events are asked to contact Hearing and Sight Solutions to arrange a tailored event for their locality.

Meet Richard from Hearing and Sight Solutions at the South Devon Healthcare Low Vision Awareness Raising Day at Torquay on Friday 12 March. Hearing and Sight Solutions fully supports the work of local Low Vision Service Committees and Richard will be available throughout the day to inform people about the work we do.

As a follow up to this event we are arranging a one-day seminar Understanding Vision Care Pathways at Exeter on Tuesday 18 May. Further information about this can be found on our Courses for 2010 page.

Remember to contact Hearing and Sight Solutions for your training needs.

February 2010

Hearing and Sight Solutions is formally launched on March 9 at Fry Club, Keynsham with two freshly designed half day seminars. The morning seminar is Supporting Patients with Sight Loss and will be of interest to staff from health Centres, GP Surgeries and Community Hospitals. We know there is a credit crunch and are offering these courses at a crunch-busting £25 which includes all handouts, certificates of attendance and light refreshments on arrival.

These courses will be happening at other locations so watch the updates on our Courses for 2010 page.
